March 2011

The Washington Post reported last week that about two dozen D.C. workers who were fired by Chipotle for not having the proper immigration documents gathered to protest their terminations.

Forty workers, many of whom are Hispanic immigrants, were terminated March 9 after the chain conducted a review of two D.C. restaurants and found that some workers could not prove their immigration status.

“We found that these workers were not legally authorized to work in this country,” said Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold. “Many workers left immediately, but we had to let others go because we can’t employ them under the law because they are not legally authorized to work in the United States.”

There is nothing particularly unusual about protesting being fired but what’s interesting about this protest was that it was more focused on the manner in which they were fired rather than the reason for the firings.

The disgruntled former employees didn’t want to discuss their immigration status with the Post but instead focused their complaints about what they felt was the lack of respect by the chain when they were fired.

“We’ve dedicated so much time to Chipotle, and for them to fire us all of a sudden, and in this way, made us feel terrible,” Yeny Portales, one of the fired workers, wrote in statement. “We felt like they didn’t value our years of service and that we, as their employees, didn’t matter to them.”

Let’s see they knew they were illegal and therefore working illegally and they think they deserve to be treated as if they were legal when being fired?

All the stores did was take the employees into a back room and terminate them which isn’t really all that different than what happens in corporate America where an employee is called into an office and fired and the escorted out of the building.  That’s probably a lot more humiliating than being fired by a fast food restaurant.

This is just another example of the fact that we have become a nation on entitlements and in this case those entitlements apparently extend to illegal immigrants or at least they think they should.

The workers got what they deserved, nothing more, nothing less.

Bill Franks of AFT-W Local 4848 addressing a group of teachers in Wisconsin called the recent events in Wisconsin a revolution and said that he wanted to learn from the Socialists.

In other words he wants to turn Wisconsin school children into future Socialists.

Franks also referred to the Republicans as the forces of evil for eviscerating 50 years of labor peace and taking away the public workers right to collectively bargain.

For the teachers protecting their rights and their pensions is more important than making sure the state can actually meet its current and future obligations and that is irresponsible,

Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) was back at it again during the hearings on on radical Islam chaired by fellow Rep. Peter King (R-NY).

Jackson-Lee showed her brilliance by quoting herself in the third person and telling attendees that the the hearing won’t bring any redeeming information and that it was tainted.

In referring to the Constitution Jackson-Lee said that this breathing document is in pain and referred to current activities by the Klan and the funding of human intelligence which she apparently has very little of.

Whew! For a minute there I thought the pseudo conservative Joe Scarborough was actually going to leave MSNBC for greener pastures. But as the New York Post’s Page Six reports he isn’t going anywhere.

“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough insists that he and Mika Brzezinski are happy at MSNBC and are not shopping a new show around to other networks. We’d heard that the co-hosts of MSNBC’s popular morning show were looking for a syndication deal and that CBS was interested. We also heard from multiple sources that “Morning Joe” executive producer Chris Licht was reaching out to other networks for a new job in case Scarborough and Brzezinski left. But Scarborough tells Page Six, “Mika and I are not ‘shopping’ a show to anyone. Nor have we since ‘Morning Joe’ was launched in 2007. Since that time, Mika and I have loved working side by side with Chris Licht and consider him to be a part of our family. Mika, Chris and I hope to be working together for decades to come. Anyone suggesting otherwise is not telling the truth.”

More likely is that Joe did shop around and found no takers.

The pair hosted a radio program a few years ago and it rapidly faded from view when it couldn’t attract listeners or advertisers.

Maybe Joe and Mika can sell the MSNBC audience but on a larger stage they just aren’t that interesting.
