Chris Matthews discussed the slew of voter ID laws that have been proposed or enacted across the country coming to the conclusion that Republicans are trying to suppress the minority vote. When addressing the issue of voter fraud guest Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League said it was a “smokescreen” and that “most voter irregularities take place because of elections officials.”

Elections officials aren’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but when people can vote without having to prove who they are it opens the door to potential vote fraud and that’s something everyone should be concerned about.

I have worked polls in the past where voters were surprised that ID wasn’t necessary when it’s all but required when using a credit card or writing a check when shopping which to me is far less important than ensuring a fair and accurate vote count.

Until this becomes the accepted practice across the country the dead will be waiting in the wings to cast their ballots when needed.
