After ten years as the lone conservative voice on ABC’s The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck is leaving the show to join Fox News as the new co-host of Fox and Friends.

elisabeth-hasselbeckThe departure of Hasselbeck has been rumored for months and the move to Fox News should be a good fit.

Hasselbeck’s last day on The View is today and she will start her new Fox gig in September, just as the fall TV season gets underway.

Gretchen Carlson who has co-hosted the show since 2006, will be getting her own daytime show as Fox continues to rearrange its schedule after revealing last week that Megyn Kelly will host a primetime program when she returns from maternity leave in the fall.  That announcement had insiders speculating as to what will happen to Greta Van Susteren, who will likely lose her 10 p.m. slot to Kelly.

That picture just got a little cloudier with the Carlson announcement as it likely means that Van Susteren will get either the 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. slot that Kelly vacated, but that isn’t guaranteed either.

While I like the Kelly and Hasselbeck moves-I think Hasselbeck will be infinitely better than Carlson, I’m leery about Carlson hosting her own show and Van Susteren potentially moving to daytime.

Fox News has built a ratings juggernaut and there is no doubt that Kelly will improve their primetime ratings, but it may be at the expense of the daytime ratings and it’s unlikely Carlson and Van Susteren will be able to duplicate Kelly’s afternoon ratings.
